This week at the Consumer Electronics Show, the neon-drenched annual trade show here, these companies are demonstrating the breadth of their ambitions, like 10-inch screens above the gearshift showing high-definition videos, 3-D maps and Web pages.

Hello folks! Welcome to the first debate. Allow me to take a moment to talk about the origins of this idea as well as provide a perspective on some of the criticism and complaints surrounding it.

On a post concerning Glenn Beck's ties to a gold investment company (http://current.com/items/91682765_fox-to-beck-maybe-you-should-cut-back-on-the-g…), ihatethemall made this comment:

” Instead of finding bullshit to spew maybe you should take a show of his, List every point he talks about, then try to dispute what he says with facts. If you cant do it, you have failed.

I challenge ANYONE here to pick a date. Watch the show, then come back here and debate what he has said. EVERY point in that shows air date. I would bet none of you will take that challenge. Send me the date of what show it is so I make sure to watch that show. “

I accepted this challenge, and we worked out the details of the show and the points that would be covered. Ibrake4rappers13 joined the party, setting up a post with the Glenn Beck show we agreed on, Jan 6 (http://current.com/items/91846514_deliatheartist-vs-ihatethemall.htm) You can find the entire episode, in parts, on that post as well as community reaction to this idea.

Some of this community reaction was anger- this is irrelevant, stupid, a “circle jerk”, etc. Here me out: there is a phenomenon going on in our modern world, and it's called the New Media- and guess what? We're it! Current.com is the perfect example of New Media, sitting at the crossroads of journalism, social media, community and activism. Current.com is not just about reporting news, it's about making news and facilitating discussion.

Imagine you were getting into a heated discussion with someone about, oh say, evolution. Normally people will spend response after response arguing their point- but what about challenging someone to a formal debate? (I want to debate you on the subject of evolution! I will present my arguments on such and such a date.) Or imagine open calls for debates – (Reasons Obama is/is not a socialist, Which is the better Sci-Fi movie of 2009, Avatar or District 9? Is genetic modification always bad?) WE- Current's community- can pull from the headlines to construct debates that allow us to address important issues while having the fun of seeing Community regulars go head to head in a debate setting.

This is not an irrelevant experience – it is a community building, fun, interesting experiment which Current USERS have developed to gain further insight and perspective into world issues- and that truly is what Current.com is about at the forefront of the New Media.

Having said all that, I have done just as Ihatethemall wanted (I think) and I have arranged my arguments to coincide with the way the video is broken up on ibrake's post (Part I, Part II, etc) I think this will make it easier to follow the points being made. Also, I don't expect Ihatethemall to be able to counter my arguments until tomorrow when his schedule allows, so “stay tuned” if you are interested!

Let the debate being! And if you have criticisms, comments, ideas, etc, don't just complain- tell us WHY you think it's stupid, or how you can make it better. Current.com, much like our world, is not helped via bitching and moaning, but by constructive brainstorming and action! This debate, and hopefully more, will be kept in the Current Debates group! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sam Mendes is in negotiations to direct the next James Bond film. Mendes has directed such movies as American Beauty (which he won an oscar for), Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, and the recent Away We Go. MGM is fast tracking the movie and shooting for a 2011 release. What’s interesting is that MGM was supposed to be sold in the upcoming months, possibly jeopardizing the Bond franchise for a while. Now, with Mendes in final negotiations it seems that the new Bond film will happen sooner than later. The last Bond film, Quantum of Solace, was directed by Marc Foster and was the second most profitable Bond film (behind Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale in 2006). However, critically Quantum of Solace was hammered, and was hit or moss for the general public. To me it felt like a step back from the inventiveness of Casino Royale. It was more like a Jason Bourne film than a James Bond.

France could start taxing Internet advertising revenues from online giants such as Google, using the funds to support creative industries that have been hit by the digital revolution, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The proposal, put forward in a government-commissioned survey, is France’s latest challenge to the virtual free-for-all for Internet content. The country has previously caused controversy with some of the world’s harshest laws on online piracy.

The levy, which would also apply to other operators such as MSN and Yahoo, would put an end to “enrichment without any limit or compensation,” newspaper Liberation quoted Guillaume Cerutti, one of the authors of the report, as saying.

It would apply even if the operator had its offices outside France, as long as the Internet users who click on ad banners or sponsored links are here, the paper said.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has repeatedly tried to present himself as a defender of France’s cultural heritage in the digital age, most recently calling for public projects to rival Google’s plans for a massive online library.

Critics point out the issue of compensating authors is a complex one, given that many of the songs, films and texts published online these days are created for free by amateurs outside the cultural establishment.

Cerutti, president of Sotheby’s in France, drew up the report together with Jacques Toubon, a former minister, and Patrick Zelnik, a former music executive who has among others produced the songs of France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

The authors also suggest taxing Internet service providers to raise tens of millions of euros that would be invested in developing the online music business and other creative sectors. For example, they propose offering government-subsidized online subscriptions and expanding online publishing platforms, said Liberation, which obtained a copy of the report.

In recent months, operators and users have faced increased pressure to pay for content from online newspapers to films and books. Under France’s new Internet piracy law, repeat illegal downloaders will be disconnected and fined.

The new report was handed into the Culture Ministry earlier this week. It was not immediately clear if the government has a precise timetable to act on it.

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency proposed a stricter new standard for smog-causing pollutants on Thursday that, if adopted, will impose large costs on industry and local governments but will also bring substantial health benefits to millions of Americans.

The proposed standard would replace one set by the Bush administration in March 2008, which has been challenged in court by environmental advocates as too weak to adequately protect human health and the environment.

The Obama administration’s proposal sets a primary standard for ground-level ozone of no more than 0.06 to 0.07 parts per million, to be phased in over two decades. The new rule would replace the standard of 0.075 parts per million imposed by the Bush administration. The agency is also proposing a secondary standard that will vary with the seasons to protect plants and trees from repeated exposure.

The agency estimated that complying with the new standard will cost $19 billion to $90 billion a year by 2020, to be largely be borne by manufacturers, oil refiners and utilities. But the agency said that those costs would be offset by the benefits to human health, which it valued at $13 billion to $100 billion a year in the same period.

If the stricter standard of 0.06 parts per million is adopted, agency analysts project that as many as 12,000 premature deaths from heart or lung diseases could be avoided, along with thousands of cases of bronchitis, asthma and non-fatal heart attacks.

“E.P.A. is stepping up to protect Americans from one of the most persistent and widespread pollutants we face,” Lisa P. Jackson, the agency’s administrator, said in a statement. “Smog in the air we breathe poses a very serious health threat, especially to children and individuals suffering from asthma and lung disease. It dirties our air, clouds our cities and drives up our health care costs across the country.”

Smog or ground-level ozone is not emitted by a single source, but is formed by a reaction of nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide and methane in the presence of sunlight. The main sources of these pollutants are power plants and factories, fumes from volatile solvents, vehicles emissions and gasoline vapors. Smog is worse in the summer because of heat and sunlight, and can travel hundreds of miles from its source to pollute wilderness areas.

Representatives of the oil and gas industry, which said they have already invested $175 billion toward environmental improvements, were quick to say the proposal lacked ''scientific justification.''

The media are awash with talking heads bloviating about the top stories of the last decade. The wired-in society. The growth of organic food. The new frugality. This is the ritual that reveals their true function in the culture: pacification. It's their way of signaling the masses that Bigger Thinkers are looking after things, so go back to your Wii or Survivor or Facebook reveries.

The amazing thing is how little is ever mentioned about the stories that really mattered, those that affected the very nature of our society, its institutions, and the relation of the people to their state and society. Those stories paint a picture of danger, of a people who have lost control of their government and the corporations that own it. But you'll hear nary a word about such difficult truths from any storyteller in the conventional media.

So here, in no particular order, are my Top Ten Stories of the Naughties, the ones that really matter.

1) Iraq was all premised on lies, yet we're still there. Saddam Hussein wasn't pursuing Weapons of Mass Destruction. He wasn't involved in 9/11. He wasn't engaged with Al Qaeda. We know all these things. And we know they were false at the time they were proffered. Yet, there we are, with no intent to leave, our very presence spitting in the face of International Law and the international community we so unctuously pretend to respect. 2) The fact that 2/3 of all economic growth went to top 1%. John Kennedy's social contract had a rising tide lifting all boats. Meanwhile the middle class has suffered a $13 trillion writedown in wealth as a result of the housing collapse. The banking bailout and the health care “reform” debate showed as never before the extent to which corporations have captured government and use it to redirect national wealth to themselves and their owners. 3) The Global War on Terror [GWOT]. Or more specifically, the ease with which the “GWOT” has replaced the Cold War as the justification for the ever-increasing militarization of society. It's 2010! Happy New Year, whop-dee-do, and all that! I've decided the world has brought us to a new place, a new beginning of a new decade where we will see great new things happen.

Lets take stock of what brought us here. First of all we now have corporations in this country that are “too big to fail,” so big in fact that they don't even have to make a profit to stay afloat. They get government corporate welfare. Now what other country has that shit going for it?

I think we should all welcome this new change in America as we move now toward a corporate socialism, where companies will no longer have to worry about competition, or those antiquated ideas like “build a better mouse trap” or ” the customer is always right” or making money because they “EARN” it. It's the new millennium folks and time we all move on from the antiquated failed industrial ingenuity capitalism of the 18th century to the new corporate socialized welfare state.

Now, in celebration and as part of the PR campaign to bring this new change home, it's time we upgrade our flag. 13 stripes and 50 stars? Come on. Are we kidding? How many hundreds of years have we had that crap? Sure it was exciting when every few years they added a new star. But those times are long gone. Ain't no more states gonna join this union. No fucking way. The only union anyone is gonna join is the E Union. I mean come on now. One currency and multilingual, plus they got the Riviera, nude beaches, and the Cannes film festival. Sheeeet. I'm going EU baby. Screw this USA bullshit.

So to upgrade our flag and at least make like we even want to be an EU contender I say with spiff it up with the AIG, Citibank and Bank of America logos. Money talks folks. Yesserieebob. Ain't but one thing that will garner people's attention away from boobs on the beach, and that's green currency baby.

Now while we're at it, we have to set people straight on what the good ole USA is all about. This whole equality thing is getting way too embarrassing. How can we have a Declaration of Independence and a Constitution that talk about equality when we have to get on with racial tazer profiling and Muslim only lines at our airports? Everyone knows that when our forefathers spoke of all men being created equal, what they really meant was all rich whitey men who married their cousins. They didn't mean “women.” They didn't mean blacks or Hispanics or any of all these other growing hoards of races infiltrating our country to the point of actually making whitey the minority. So it's time we clarify this shit for all people to understand. RICH – WHITEY – MARRIED THEIR COUSINS. That's it! Everyone else can go fucking die.

Which brings me to health care in this country. If your ain't rich and white, then go die. Whitey ain't paying for non 'a y'all.

So let's review. We'll need to amend the Constitution to rewrite the Constitution to more accurately reflect the reality of the USA. Hey, this is nothing more than truth, honesty and the American way. Equality ain't truth. Capitalism ain't truth. But, Whitey rules in America? Now that' s a truth we can all agree on. Ain't it the truth?

Cramped On Land, Big-Oil Bets At Sea

Big Oil never wanted to be here, in 4,300 feet of water far out in the Gulf of Mexico, drilling through nearly five miles of rock.

It is an expensive way to look for oil. Chevron Corp. is paying nearly $500,000 a day to the owner of the Clear Leader, one of the world's newest and most powerful drilling rigs. The new well off the coast of Louisiana will connect to a huge platform floating nearby, which cost Chevron $650 million to build. The first phase of this oil-exploration project took more than 10 years and cost $2.7 billion — with no guarantee it would pay off.

Chevron came here, an hour-long helicopter ride south of New Orleans, because so many of the places it would rather be — big, easily tapped oil fields close to shore — have become off-limits. Western oil companies have been kicked out of much of the Middle East in recent decades, had assets seized in Venezuela and seen much of the U.S. roped off because of environmental regulations. Their access in Iran is limited by sanctions, in Russia by curbs on foreign investment, in Iraq by violence.

So, Chevron and other major oil companies are moving ever farther from shore in search of oil. That quest is paying off as these companies discover unexpectedly large quantities of oil — oil that only they have the technology and financial muscle to find and produce.

In May, the first wells from Chevron's latest Gulf of Mexico project came online. The wells are now pumping 125,000 barrels of oil a day, making the project one of the gulf's biggest producers. In September, BP PLC announced what could be the biggest discovery in the gulf in years: a field that could hold three billion barrels.

Beyond the Gulf of Mexico, companies have announced big finds off the coasts of Brazil and Ghana, leading some experts to suggest the existence of a massive oil reservoir stretching across the Atlantic from Africa to South America.
